GOOD NEWS at long last!
Last night the Council and Mayor voted 3 to 2 to approve the Public Works Yard as the permanent site for the Cabin Village.
The council members and Mayor saw through the disinformation being distributed and promulgated by the Persimmon Hill residents. Their arguments to relocate the project were a thinly veiled attempt to derail the project.
Leslie Rule, the third vote needed to pass the project, vacillated in her support. While she said she did not want to sink the project, she did want to hear if the other council members were in favor of looking at the City Hall Park. When it was clear they were not, she did vote in favor of the PWY.
Mayor Gilman, and notably Councilwoman Lang, did an admirable job of explaining their reasoning for support of the PWY.
What’s Next?
The City Manager has been directed by Council to continue the Design Review Permit and to negotiate the Development Management Agreement with Dignity Moves. City Council will then discuss and vote to approve, deny or direct the City Manager to renegotiate with Dignity Moves.
The phase two soil report did come back with slightly elevated levels of both lead and arsenic, notably in the pile of debris that is slated to be removed. Rincon Consultants will do additional studies to determine the extent of the contamination. The Rincon representative did feel that the contamination was minimal and might be mitigated by the grading necessary for the project. Their findings and cost of possible remediation will be brought before the City Council at a later date to approve the mitigation or look for an alternate site.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to speak and write letters. Your involvement made a difference.
We are at the finish line and are confident that both the soils report and the contract with Dignity Moves will be approved by City Council.
Thank you all for your support on this issue!
