Support OBX SPCA policy to allow a pet and their family to be together during euthanasia.

The Issue

The Outer Banks SPCA provides many important community services including no cost humane owner requested euthanasia.  You are required to surrender your pet but you can contract with a private cremation company and have your pets cremains returned to you upon request.  At this time, the OBSPCA does not permit pets to be with their owners during euthanasia.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, it is beneficial for both the pet and the owner to be together during the euthanasia process (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2007). This critical emotional support at the end of a pet's life can bring comfort and closure.

If you would like to show the OBSPCA and Dare County that you support pets whose families can not afford veterinary services to be able to be with their families during their final journey, you can sign the attached petition before January 1, 2025.  If there is enough community support, we will present the petition to the Dare County Board of Commissioners at their January, 2025 9am meeting.
