Support Mt. Rainier's True Indigenous Name
Why this petition matters
I am a new resident in Seattle, WA and recently moved from the East Coast to this beautiful state one month ago. Not only am I inspired by the gorgeous scenery and landscape, I am also proud to live in the only American city named after an indigenous leader, Chief Seattle. However, I believe that our most famous landmark, Mt. Rainier, should be given back it's original name: Mount Tacoma or Mount Tahoma (In the Native language Twulshootseed, the mountain is called təqʷuʔməʔ — pronounced “Taquoma.”). It's indigenous name means "the mother of all waters" and no name could better describe the beauty and importance of our most beloved active volcano. In recent years, it is my understanding that the Puyallup Tribe has launched a campaign to rename Mt. Rainier with the intention of righting what can only be described as a historical wrong. The mountain was "discovered" by Captain George Vancouver and was named after his good friend: Peter Rainier. I believe that, by returning this beautiful mountain's name to its indigenous roots, we as a city and state would be doing the right and just thing. It would be one way of thanking our indigenous brothers and sisters for all they have done to make our city and state prosperous and beautiful.
