Support Mental Health Resources in Early Learning Classrooms in Ontario

Support Mental Health Resources in Early Learning Classrooms in Ontario
The Issue
In early learning and kindergarten programs, children are expected to build relationships, regulate emotions, and succeed in structured environments. However, not all children have the support they need to do so.
Many children enter classrooms feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unable to express their needs. These behaviours are often misunderstood, when in reality, they are a form of communication.
Research shows that early childhood experiences play a critical role in shaping long-term mental health and development. Despite this, many early learning environments lack access to mental health professionals, educator training, and appropriate classroom resources to support children effectively.
Educators are doing their best to support children, but they cannot do it alone. Without proper support systems in place, children’s needs may go unmet, impacting their ability to learn, grow, and build relationships.
We are calling on the Ontario provincial government to increase support for children’s mental health in early learning and kindergarten programs by:
• Increasing access to child mental health professionals (such as psychologists and counsellors)
• Providing mental health training for educators
• Enhancing classroom resources that support emotional regulation and well-being
Every child deserves to feel safe, understood, and supported in their learning environment. Early mental health support is not an extra, it is essential.
Please sign this petition to support stronger mental health resources in early learning classrooms across Ontario.
