"Support Men's Mental Health Education at UCSB"

The Issue

This petition is to advocate for the implementation of a class specifically focused on men's mental health at UCSB or our local schools. This issue is personal to me because I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of societal expectations on men, preventing them from seeking help and support when facing mental health challenges.

Growing up, I have seen many men in my life struggle silently with their emotions and mental well-being. The pressure to be strong and self-reliant often leads them to believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness, uncertaint vunerability, or not needed at all because they can "just figure it out". This harmful stereotype not only perpetuates stigma but also prevents individuals from accessing the resources they need.

By introducing a class dedicated to men's mental health, we can address these issues head-on and provide young boys and men with the knowledge, tools, and support necessary for maintaining good mental well-being. Here are some reasons why this initiative is of siginificant importance:

  1. Most men by the time they're in their 20s or 30s don't yet know how to deal with mental health and in turn deal with it externally, rather than internally.
  2. Men make up 50% of the population but are nearly 80% of suicides (CDC in 2021).
  3. Stigma Surrounding Help-Seeking: Research by Movember Foundation reveals that over 40% of young men aged 18-34 feel they must face their problems alone due to societal expectations.
  4. Untreated mental health issues have a profound impact on students' academic performance. Leading to lower grades and reduced opportunities (American Psychological Association).

Providing education on topics such as emotional intelligence, coping strategies specific to male experiences, creating and maintaining healty relationships, increasing communication skills, and adequate resources within the school would lead to young men taking initiative and prioritizing their mental well-being, leading to an overall better community.

I believe UCSB and even local schools should take a proactive stance in supporting men's mental health by introducing a dedicated class that addresses these unique challenges faced by boys and men.

Signing this petition would ensure men don't need to feel or face issues alone, while providing an educational program specific to men's mental health.
