Support MBTA's Commuter Rail Workers' Rights to Fair Working Conditions
The Issue
The Issue At Hand
As an advocate for fair labor practices, I am deeply concerned about the working conditions faced by the union workers operating the MBTA’s commuter rail network in Massachusetts. Recent reports highlight the grievances voiced by these essential workers, who are prepared to strike if their concerns remain unaddressed.
The testimonies shared by Transport Workers Local 2054 president Ed Flaherty shed light on the challenges faced by these workers. It is alarming to learn that many of them are not receiving a living wage and are operating without a contract for over 200 days. The stark disparities in wages compared to industry standards, with the lack of sick leave and adequate benefits, paint a grim picture of their working conditions.
Furthermore, the privatization of the commuter rail has not led to improvements in the lives of these workers, as shown by the struggles faced by newly hired cleaners who qualify for government assistance due to their low wages. It is evident that the current system is failing to prioritize the well-being of these hardworking individuals, who play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of our transportation network. A strike and the subsequent shut down of this vital public transportation network would have far reaching impacts on the local economy, on populations dependent public transportion, and those with low income.
Action Needed
In light of these concerning problems, I urge the MBTA Board of Directors to take immediate action to address the grievances raised by the union workers. Specifically, I call for:
- Fair wages and benefits that align with industry standards and the high cost of living in Massachusetts.
- Implementation of sick leave and other essential benefits to support the health and well-being of workers.
- Respectful and transparent negotiations between Keolis and the union representatives to reach a fair and equitable contract agreement.
By signing this petition, we stand in solidarity with the MBTA commuter rail workers and demand justice and fairness in their working conditions. It is imperative that their voices are heard, and meaningful action is taken to address their concerns without delay.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response and action in support of fair working conditions for all MBTA commuter rail network employees.
