I was sick to my stomach this morning after reading news that Tony Robinson's family has agreed to a $3.35 million lawsuit. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.
We're trying to get information on whether the city authorized this settlement. Because it's hard for some of us to believe an insurance company would make a substantial decision like this without approval.
But here are some initial thoughts about this settlement . . .
It sends a message that it's ok to participate in criminal behavior, get high on illegal drugs, and attack police officers.
It's an insult to Officer Matt Kenny, someone who fulfilled his oath and kept the public safe that evening. In return for his service, he's been disparaged for the past two years by anti-cop groups who seem oblivious to the facts.
This settlement gives the "appearance" that he did something wrong. Some people seem to have forgotten that he was cleared of any wrong-doing. (Heck, anyone with the most average of reasoning abilities knows he did nothing wrong).
Every Madison police officer who serves this city with pride, courage, and dignity knows that they could very well find themselves in a similar position one day. That they too, could be subjected to the whims of a lazy media, the indifference of a city government, and wrath of a sound-bite society.
I can tell you this: There is an all-volunteer, grassroots group of dedicated supporters here, ready to rally behind Officer Kenny when he needs us. And we will continue to be a source of support for Chief Koval and MPD. We do this not for money, glory, or power, but because we care.
But we need you, too. It's not enough to become outraged on social media. It's imperative to followup on any action alerts we send, to keep in contact with your elected officials, write op-eds, and show up at public meetings. It may require traveling a bit out of your comfort zone, but it's worth it. (Heck, I've traveled waaay out of mine. It's scary at times, but I lived to tell about it. : )
I've mentioned this before, but my husband, Steve Fitzsimmons is running for alder of district 10. The impetus for his running is to support Chief Koval & MPD, and to promote public safety. But he also wants to listen to and serve constituents.
For those of you who have already donated to his campaign, you have no idea how greatly we appreciate it. But we also need more contributions to help get Steve's message out.

Postcard mailing expenses are in the thousands, and frankly, I'm not willing to go into personal debt to fund this campaign. Even if you could donate $10, it would help immensely.
All the best.
