Support Laurel Girls Soccer Co-op with Wilmington
The Issue
Growing up, being part of a high school soccer team was more than just playing a sport; it was a path to personal growth, community building, and lasting friendships. My dream has always been that our youth soccer program in Laurel would one day have the same opportunity. Unfortunately, while our soccer club is a core part of our school district, our girls currently lack the platform to continue playing at the high school level unless they join a club team. This is an opportunity gap we can and should bridge.
To combat this, I am advocating for a cooperative agreement between Laurel and the Wilmington School District. Such a co-op would bring about many benefits: it would allow our girls to participate in interscholastic competitions, provide equitable access to sports, and foster stronger community ties with neighboring Wilmington.
Having this program in place would mean that school pride and spirit are extended to the soccer field, further enriching the high school experience for our young athletes. Studies have shown that participation in high school sports increases academic outcomes and reduces dropout rates. According to the Women's Sports Foundation, girls who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem, which are crucial for their development both in and out of school.
Our community is passionate about soccer, and our girls are enthusiastic about competing. Mr. Rich and the school board can take decisive action by initiating talks with the Wilmington School District to start the co-op process.
This call to action is not just a plea, but a promise to our girls and our community that we support their dreams and ambitions. By signing this petition, you are showing that our community stands united in providing our youth the chance to grow through the sport we love. Let’s make high school soccer a reality for Laurel girls by supporting this cooperative agreement. Sign the petition today and help us make history.
