The Kurds have been steadfast allies to the United States, standing shoulder to shoulder with us in numerous conflicts, including the fight against Saddam Hussein, Al-Queda and  ISIS. Despite not having a state of their own, they have relentlessly fought for principles that resonate deeply with American values: democracy, freedom, and human rights. This relationship built on trust and mutual respect calls for our support in their quest for independence.

The Kurdish people, spread across Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, have a distinct cultural and linguistic identity, with a population of over 50 million. Despite their rich history and significant contributions to the region's stability, they remain one of the largest stateless nations in the world. The absence of an independent state has led to systemic oppression, economic deprivation, and political injustice for decades.

In Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has demonstrated commendable governance, creating a beacon of prosperity amidst turmoil. Their efforts in promoting women's rights, religious tolerance, and investments in education serve as a model for the Middle East. The autonomous region is a testament to what the Kurds could achieve on a broader scale if they were granted their independence.

Supporting Kurdish independence aligns with our moral and strategic interests. Politically, a sovereign Kurdish state could serve as a crucial ally in a region that's rife with instability. Economically, this would open new avenues for trade partnerships and energy resources, considering the Kurdish region's oil and gas wealth.

While the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East is complex, advocating for Kurdish independence is a pragmatic and ethical stance. The United States should leverage its diplomatic influence to support the Kurdish cause, pressuring nations opposed to Kurdish sovereignty to allow a peaceful and democratic process for independence.
