The Issue

The city of Cambridge has the unique sense of community that permeates our city. One of the cherished appointments  that has fostered unity and inclusion has been the invocation at city council meetings. While some may argue that it is unconstitutional, I firmly believe that the invocation is not only lawful but a vital part of our civic culture. It brings together people from diverse backgrounds, aiming to serve as a beacon of hope, unity, and moral guidance.

The invocation acknowledges the multicultural and pluralistic nature of Cambridge, as our community includes individuals of various faiths and beliefs. During council meetings, the invocation offers a moment of reflection and peace, for the discussions ahead. As seen in other civic meetings, Dorchester County and The State of Maryland start their meetings with prayer. I believe this act brings us into alignment with the historical tradition of including faith into government.

In 2014, the Supreme Court case Town of Greece v. Galloway reaffirmed that such invocations do not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, provided they remain inclusive and non-coercive. This precedent supports the argument that our practice here in Cambridge is constitutionally sound and should be maintained.

Removing invocation from city council meetings would be a loss for our community. It would mean the erosion of a tradition that has welcomed various religious and non-religious leaders to offer wisdom and encouragement, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.

Regardless of individual beliefs, invocation is a valuable opportunity to pause and consider the collective good we all strive for. It reminds council members, and attendees alike, of our shared values and aspirations. By supporting the continuation of invocation at city council meetings, we are upholding a tradition that is inclusive, respectful, and unifying.

Additionally, the city council passed Resolution  No 25-13 that allows prayer at the beginning of each meeting. I agree and support that decision from our city council.

I urge you to join me in advocating for this important tradition. Your support is crucial in ensuring that Cambridge remains a community bound by respect, where diverse voices are heard and valued. Sign this petition to keep invocation at the forefront of our city council meetings.
