Support Independent Living to Reduce Marital Conflicts

The Issue

As a woman and a citizen of India, it deeply concerns me to see the silent struggles many women face after marriage due to traditional expectations. In most cases, a woman is expected to leave her own home and immediately adjust to her husband’s family household. While this tradition has existed for generations, it often creates an unequal starting point in marriage where the burden of adjustment falls almost entirely on the woman.
Living in a joint household can sometimes lead to constant supervision, expectations, and interference in the personal lives of newly married couples. Decisions about finances, careers, family planning, and daily life are often influenced or controlled by extended family members. This lack of privacy and autonomy can create stress between partners, weaken communication, and increase the chances of conflict within the marriage.
In many situations, women also face pressure to tolerate disrespect, emotional abuse, or unfair treatment in the name of “adjustment” or “family honor.” When couples do not have the space to resolve their issues privately, small disagreements can escalate into serious conflicts and, in some cases, domestic violence.
Encouraging newly married couples to establish their own independent homes—whether rented or owned—can help create a healthier foundation for marriage. When couples live independently, they are able to make decisions together, manage responsibilities jointly, and build a relationship based on mutual respect and equality.
Independent living does not mean breaking family relationships or abandoning parents. Parents and extended family members will always remain an important and respected part of a couple’s life. Couples can still remain closely connected with their families, support their parents emotionally and financially, and care for them when needed. However, allowing couples to start their married life with independence can reduce unnecessary conflicts, improve mental well-being, and help prevent situations where pressure and interference damage the relationship. There can also be situations where living together is necessary, such as when parents are elderly, physically dependent, or require constant care. In such cases, families may choose arrangements that ensure proper support and responsibility toward parents.
Creating awareness and encouraging independent living for newly married couples can therefore be an important step toward reducing marital conflicts, preventing domestic violence, and promoting gender equality within families.
Now is the time to support newly married couples in establishing independent homes. Government and policymakers can play an important role by promoting awareness about healthy and equal marriages, encouraging couples to start independent households, and introducing affordable housing or rental support schemes for young couples. Educational programs on gender equality and healthy relationships in schools and colleges can also help change long-standing social pressures. Taking these steps can reduce family pressure, improve emotional well-being, and allow couples to build marriages based on respect, harmony, and shared decision-making.
By supporting and sharing this petition, you are helping create a future where marriages in India are based on partnership, respect, and equality rather than pressure and unequal expectations.
