Support H.R. 3619 Toxic Free Beauty Act of 2023

Support H.R. 3619 Toxic Free Beauty Act of 2023
The Issue
My name is Tiffany Mitchell. I am a Registered Nurse and doctoral nursing student. During one of my policy assignments this semester, I decided to look into breast cancer mortality rates. The rate at which American women are diagnosed and die of breast cancer is unacceptable. Breast cancer:
- Accounts for over 15% of newly diagnosed cancer cases in the U.S.
- Is the costliest cancer
- Is the #1 cause of cancer deaths in Black and Hispanic women.
Women, take a look at your friend group. Men, take a look at the women in your life. 1 in 8 will be or have already been diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer deaths occur in 19.6 of every 100,000 women. In Black women, that number increases significantly by 40% to 27.6.
While mortality rates have slowly decreased over the decades, it is time to do more in terms of breast cancer prevention. Early detection is great, but it should not be the goal. The Toxic Free Beauty Act of 2023 would prohibit 11 toxic chemicals found in beauty and personal care products sold in the U.S. These chemicals have already been banned in Europe, Canada, and several states (CA, NY, MD, MN, ME, WA, and CO). All women deserve this protection and now is the time to take action. I don't know about you, but I do not want to have to think about whether my favorite beauty products or forms of self-care will usher me into a breast cancer diagnosis. I am asking you to sign this petition in support of Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX) for the Toxic Free Beauty Act of 2023.
Please share this petition! We want Congress to know it is time for change.
