Many grandparents in our communities, including myself, suffer the heart-wrenching pain of being alienated from our beloved grandchildren. Imagine the joy and wisdom we could share with them, gifts now overshadowed by the current family dynamics. For years, I have been denied the simple pleasure of a grandchild's laughter and the bond that should exist between us, a pain shared by countless others in similar situations.

Grandparent-grandchild relationships are crucial for the emotional and psychological development of the young ones. Research published by the American Sociological Association highlights how these bonds influence the children's emotional well-being and contribute positively to their social development. Additionally, the University of Oxford found that children who maintain strong ties with their grandparents exhibit fewer emotional and behavioral problems, indicating the profound role grandparents play in families.

Yet, for many of us, these opportunities are merely dreams because of family disagreements that result in us being unfairly alienated. This not only causes deep emotional distress for us but also deprives the children of these nurturing relationships essential for their wholesome growth.

Our goal is to bring awareness to the severity of this issue and legislate for the rights of grandparents to maintain consistent and loving contact with their grandchildren, barring legitimate safety concerns. New Zealand, for example, serves as a model with its Grandparent and Other Relatives Law, which supports visitation rights so children can benefit from their grandparents' love and guidance.

To make a change, we propose implementing similar policies and ensuring that family court interventions always consider what is in the best interests of the child, inclusive of grandparent affinity. We urge family law reform to include clear provisions for grandparent visitation rights while maintaining a child-centric approach in all legal examinations.
