Support for the CMU Spirit Squads

The Issue

As a dancer, I am personally tired of being told to accept the bare minimum amount of support from this university. The treatment of an incredibly athletic and nationally recognized team is disappointing. But what is most disappointing is that I expected this treatment. Growing up a dancer I have always felt as if my accomplishments were not worthwhile to those of authority at any school I have attended. Is it because it is a sport dominated by women? Or is it simply ignorance of the hard work it takes to be a dancer. I have never been a part of a program full of such hard workers. What happens at practice is more than just the tons of makeup and sparkly uniforms that you see on the sidelines. All that this team wants is recognition for the hours of work that we have spent this school year. And the fact that this is too much to ask for apparently, is beyond sad.

The Central Methodist University spirit squads are teams that deserve recognition. The Central Methodist Coed Cheer program won a National Championship in 2021, and this year was the National Champion runner-up. The CMU Envy Dance team took home a 4th place finish last year followed by a National Championship this year. This program is beyond successful, but severely lacks support and funding from the university.

At Central Methodist University, and many other institutions, there is a change that needs to be made. Dancers and Cheerleaders are athletes who compete at an intensive level but rarely does the hard work get recognized. It is time for a change.
