As a constituent who is very concerned about the growing problem of autism spectrum disorders, I urge you to support funding for full implementation of the Combating Autism Act of 2006, and increased funding for autism research through the Department of Defense.
Specifically, I respectfully request that you sign onto two letters currently being circulated by Congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey, Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy of New York. The first letter requests that the House Appropriations Committee fully fund the Combating Autism Act in its Fiscal 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations bill, specifically providing a total of $168 million for autism activities in that bill. The second letter requests that the House Appropriations Committee provide $15 million for autism research in the Fiscal 2008 Defense Appropriations bill. Both funding measures are critical to the effort to expand federal autism research, surveillance, awareness, and services and treatment.
It will take a concerted effort to find ways to prevent autism spectrum disorders and ensure that those affected receive timely intervention. I hope that I can count on your leadership in this effort as you craft the appropriations bills for FY 2008.
