Support Flexible, Inclusive Learning: Create a Public Homeschool Program in WUSD!
The Issue
Who is impacted ?
Students in Washington Unified School District (WUSD) are being left without appropriate learning options.WUSD only offers an online independent study program (WUVA), which does not meet the needs of many students — especially those who are medically fragile, have disabilities, experience anxiety, or need flexible learning styles. Families are forced into choosing between an unsuitable program, chronic absenteeism, or leaving the district entirely. Neighboring districts — Davis Joint Unified (DJUSD), Woodland Joint Unified (WJUSD), and Natomas Unified (NUSD) — already offer true homeschool programs that better support these students.
What is at stake?
Without a true homeschool option, WUSD risks increasing chronic absenteeism, losing valuable ADA funding, and continuing to fail students who deserve meaningful access to education. At the same time, with today’s growing attacks on public education, many families are deciding to leave public schools altogether in search of better, more flexible learning environments.
By offering a true homeschool program, WUSD would not only better serve its existing students, but would also retain families considering leaving, attract new families into the district, and strengthen the future of public education by offering the flexibility and partnership that many West Sacramento parents are looking for. Importantly, this program would not create an additional financial burden — it would help sustain and even grow ADA funding for the district. By keeping students enrolled and engaged, WUSD could ensure financial stability while better meeting the needs of its community.
If WUSD follows the example set by DJUSD, WJUSD, and NUSD, students would have real opportunities to thrive through parent-led instruction, weekly teacher support, enrichment classes, and flexible, individualized learning plans.
Why is now the time to act?
Families across WUSD are already speaking up. Chronic absenteeism rates are rising. More and more students with disabilities, health challenges, and alternative learning needs are being underserved. Other districts in our own county have shown that offering a homeschool program is possible, successful, and beneficial to both students and districts alike. Now is the time for WUSD to act — before even more students are pushed out of education entirely. We urge WUSD leadership to prioritize creating a true public homeschool program that gives all students the chance to learn in a way that meets their needs — while securing the district’s future by keeping families enrolled.
Please sign this petition today to support educational choice, family partnership, and a stronger, more sustainable future for public education in Washington Unified School District.
