Support Dr. Sara Pizano and Miami Dade Animal Services

Support Dr. Sara Pizano and Miami Dade Animal Services
The Issue
We the undersigned urge all Miami Dade Commissioners, County Manager and Mayor to support Dr. Pizano and Miami Dade Animal Services. We also support the proposed plan for a new shelter, which will have twice the capacity of our existing shelter and be completely air conditioned, thus providing a safe and comfortable environment for animals at the facility.
Miami Dade Animal Services is one of the ten largest open intake facilities in the United States. Since Dr. Pizano joined MDAS in 2005, there have been numerous improvements that directly impact the quality of life for the animals at MDAS:
*Introduction of pain medications for all surgery patients, and pain medications and treatment plans for ill and injured animals.
*Vaccination of dogs on intake against highly infectious diseases (Distemper & Parvo viruses, Kennel Cough).
*Separation of cats and dogs, included a new cat receiving room and 2 air conditioned cat adoption rooms.
Intake increased from 30,136 in FY 05/06 to 37,333 in FY 08/09, but decreased for the first time in 5 years in FY 09/10 to 35,922. Due to increased adoptions, transfers to rescue partners and return to owners, the total number of animals saved increased from FY 04/05 (5,667) to FY 09/10 (13,942).
By all objective measures, there has been dramatic improvement at Miami Dade Animal Services. Dr. Pizano and her staff have proven their dedication to ending the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets. The homeless animals in our community need our efforts to be directed towards constructively addressing the causes of pet overpopulation, and implementation of effective programs such as increased spay/neuter, adoption and public education regarding responsible pet ownership.
