Support Dr. Mitchell

The Issue

To the administration of Life University and more specifically Dr. Bhogal,

We, the undersigned, write this petition in response to the recent complaints and accusations leveled against Dr. Melodie Mitchell-Black, which has been circulating within the student body and raised to the administration's attention. The claims made in the original petition, which focus on the professor’s personal appearance, scent, and alleged lack of professionalism, not only lack substantive evidence but also reveal underlying discriminatory biases that disproportionately affect Black faculty members at Life University.

Addressing the Accusations

The accusations made against Dr. Melodie Mitchell-Black includes speculation about the professor’s scent, including an inappropriate and unsubstantiated claim based on hearsay that they "smell of weed." Such claims are not only speculative but deeply harmful, as they evoke harmful stereotypes often imposed on Black professionals. The lack of any factual basis, and the reliance on subjective judgments concerning a professor’s personal scent undermines the integrity of the complaint.

Furthermore, the critique of Dr. Mitchell- Black’s attire as "unprofessional" exemplifies an inequitable application of professional standards. What is deemed "professional attire" is often shaped by Eurocentric norms, which can unfairly target individuals who do not align with these expectations. In truth, the professor’s choice of clothing does not affect their teaching effectiveness or the students’ ability to learn the material. These claims seem to be misplaced grievances, possibly stemming from a misunderstanding of the pedagogical approach rather than any legitimate issue with attire. This situation underscores the need for a more equitable application of professionalism in both classroom conduct and dress codes.

The claim that Dr. Mitchell-Black adjusted students without their consent is a serious accusation that lacks substantial context beyond hearsay and possibly biased witnesses. In a lab setting, students are routinely asked to volunteer for demonstrations of techniques and participation is entirely voluntary, with students having the full right to decline. Occasionally, during a demonstration, an adjustment may occur, with or without an intentional impulse due to the proper tension in a set-up. This situation highlights the importance of patient consent and the need to voice concerns, but should not overshadow  Dr. Mitchell-Black’s 11 years of service and commitment to the mission and values of Life University as a professor and Clinic Doctor.

Discriminatory Bias and Double Standards Pattern at Life University

The attacks on Dr. Mitchell- Black reflects a troubling pattern of bias that Black faculty members are disproportionately subjected to in academic environments. The focus on superficial, irrelevant factors such as scent, attire, and professionalism underscores a double standard, where Black professionals are unfairly scrutinized and held to different expectations compared to their non-Black counterparts. We must recognize that such attacks are often veiled in language of "professionalism," but ultimately serve to perpetuate systemic discrimination and prevent the success and advancement of underrepresented groups in academia.

The students who launched this petition have chosen to target irrelevant personal traits, using accusations that do not solely pertain to Dr. Mitchell-Black’s teaching abilities or the quality of education they provide. Instead of keeping their focus on the content of their instruction, students have resorted to harmful, racially-coded critiques that serve only to undermine the professor's character and professional standing.

Moreover, we are alarmed by reports that photos of Dr. Mitchell-Black were taken without their consent, directly violating university policies that explicitly prohibit photography or video recording in laboratory settings. The fact that students would engage in such unethical behavior only further undermines the legitimacy of their accusations. These actions reflect a blatant disregard for institutional policies and show a lack of respect for the professor’s privacy and professionalism. Policies are not implemented solely for the compliance of faculty and staff, but  students too.

Championing Excellence and Dedication

We, the undersigned, recognize the undeniable qualities of Dr. Mitchell-Black as an educator. Their passion, attention to detail, adaptability, and extensive experience are well known to those who have had the privilege of learning under their instruction. While it is understandable that students may at times disagree with certain pedagogical approaches, this does not justify the character assassination that has been allowed to unfold.

Dr. Melodie Mitchell- Black has consistently demonstrated a commitment to student success, often going above and beyond to ensure that each student grasps the material. They are known for being approachable, thoughtful, and dedicated to providing a comprehensive learning experience, even in the face of criticism and taking over courses with short notice. Disagreements regarding instructional style or methods should be resolved through constructive dialogue, not through harmful and discriminatory charged attacks on a person’s character.

Call to Action

We urge the administration to take into account the discriminatory undertones of the original petition and recognize the damage such claims can cause, not only to the professor in question but to the culture of the university as a whole. We stand firmly against any attempt to tarnish the reputation of a highly qualified and passionate educator through character assassination, and we reject the idea that personal biases about scent or attire should dictate the outcome of this situation.

Several of us are prepared to come forward and provide personal testimonials regarding our positive experiences with Dr. Mitchell-Black. We stand united in our support of their professionalism and character, and we respectfully request that the administration consider the perspectives outlined in this petition with fairness and due regard for the racial dynamics at play.

The following signees agree with the statements outlined in this rebuttal and will continue to advocate for an equitable, respectful, and unbiased academic environment for all.

Sincerely,
