The Issue

We, the undersigned citizens of Mauritius and supporters across the world, stand in solidarity with Dave Kissoondoyal, who has courageously undertaken a hunger strike to defend one of our nation’s most sacred social protections: the Basic Retirement Pension (BRP) at age 60.

The government’s proposal to raise the eligibility age to 65 is not merely a policy shift, it is a betrayal of trust, a violation of dignity and a direct assault on the elderly and vulnerable in our society.

This measure, if implemented, will:

  • Punish those who have worked all their lives in physically demanding jobs
  • Leave many 60-year-olds jobless and without a pension
  • Violate the spirit of the National Pensions Act (1976)
  • Undermine decades of trade union gains under the Workers’ Rights Act (2019)
  • Create social division while leaving untouched the lifetime parliamentary pensions for politicians.

🇲🇺 Why We Support Dave’s Hunger Strike

Dave Kissoondoyal is not asking for power, privilege, or recognition. He is sacrificing his health—and potentially his life—to stand up for the millions of Mauritians whose voices are being ignored. His fight is our fight.

This is a peaceful, moral resistance against:

  • Injustice in the name of austerity
  • Disrespect toward those who built this country

We Demand:

1. Immediate withdrawal of the proposal to raise BRP age to 65

2. National dialogue involving trade unions, civil society, and pensioners' association

3. Implementation of alternative solutions (e.g. diaspora bonds, corporate windfall levies) to sustain the BRP

4. Respect for the constitutional and social rights of the retirees
