The Issue

We are survivors of domestic violence, and I have worked alongside many women who have also been victims. This is not an easy path, as trauma often leads to addictions and mental health challenges, creating a lifelong journey towards healing. It's for these women—the ones who have endured, those who have not yet fallen victim, and the ones who tragically lost their lives to someone who professed love—that I urge you to support this essential initiative.

Domestic violence is a grave issue that affects countless individuals in our society. Every year, more women find themselves trapped in dangerous relationships, some losing their lives even amidst active restraining orders. The current system lacks sufficient preventative measures to protect potential victims.

We need to create a public registry for convicted domestic violence offenders. This registry would be an instrumental tool in preventing future incidents by allowing individuals to check if a potential partner has a history of violence. Importantly, the registry would protect the privacy of victims by excluding their names.

It is crucial for our lawmakers to support this initiative and sponsor legislation that mandates the creation of this registry. Public access to such information empowers individuals to make safer choices when entering new relationships, potentially saving lives and helping to break the cycle of abuse.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 4 women have experienced severe intimate partner violence, and around 20 individuals experience physical violence by an intimate partner every minute in the United States. These staggering statistics underline the urgent need for additional layers of prevention.

By signing this petition, you become a part of a vital movement aimed at protecting and empowering survivors and potential victims of domestic violence. Together, we can advocate for a society where individuals can feel safer in their relationships.

Please join us in urging our legislators to take action and support the development of a public domestic violence offender registry. Sign this petition to help create a safer future for all.

Thank you.
