The Issue

Living in Syracuse, I have been deeply affected by the senseless gun violence that continues to devastate our community.  In the news,  I have seen so many lives cut short, promising futures stolen away, and families torn apart by the tragic loss of loved ones. The pain of these losses is a huge reminder of the urgent need for change.

Gun violence is not just a statistic in Syracuse; it is a persistent and pervasive problem that impacts us all, particularly our youth. Our young people are becoming embroiled in violence, choosing guns over community. This is a crisis that requires immediate attention and action.

To address this grave issue, I believe we need to invest in more community-based programs and initiatives, such as block parties and after-school activities, that engage our youth in positive ways. These programs would provide our young people with a sense of belonging and purpose, as well as alternatives to violence and crime. By creating spaces for our children to connect with their peers and elders, forming bonds of friendship and mentorship, we can help divert them from a path that leads all too often to incarceration or an early grave.

Successful youth programs have been implemented in other cities and have shown tangible results. According to data from the National Institute of Justice, cities like Richmond, California, have reduced gun violence by up to 66% through community engagement programs. If Syracuse adopts similar measures, we can offer our young people a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive.

We urge local government officials, community leaders, and citizens to come together and commit resources to develop and sustain these vital programs. Let's work as a community to offer our youth the hope and opportunities they deserve, diverting their focus away from violence and towards a brighter future.

We cannot afford to lose another life to gun violence. Join me in calling for more community programs to protect our children and honor those we've lost. Please sign this petition to support the creation and expansion of youth programs in Syracuse.
