Support community gardens in Macomb Township
The Issue
As Girl Scouts, we have been learning about food systems, access to healthy food, and how communities are impacted by these issues. It has opened our eyes to an important problem: not everyone in our community can access fresh and nutritious food. In Macomb Township, many families are facing challenges, and it's clear that everyone deserves a chance to eat healthier. We have seen firsthand the benefits that community support can bring, and we are determined to be a part of the solution.
Across the country, community gardens have been shown to increase access to fresh food, improve nutrition, reduce family food budgets, and foster a sense of community. According to a study by the American Community Gardening Association, areas with community gardens see a notable reduction of food insecurity by providing up to 20 pounds of fruits and vegetables per square foot annually. These gardens also beautify neighborhoods, provide educational opportunities, and create spaces for people to connect.
We are calling on Macomb Township officials to take decisive action and support the establishment of community gardens. By doing so, we can transform vacant lots or underutilized spaces into vibrant gardens that serve the community. This involves forming partnerships with local schools, businesses, and volunteers to ensure these gardens' success. By creating these shared spaces, we can provide fresh produce to those in need and offer educational programs that teach sustainable gardening practices.
We urge Macomb Township officials to champion this initiative, which aligns with community health and sustainability goals. It is an achievable, impactful, and community-driven solution to a pressing problem.
Please join us in our efforts to create a healthier, more connected Macomb Township by signing this petition. Together, let's make positive change happen—sign now to show your support for community gardens in our area.
