Susan Diane Clevenger deserves a second chance.

She is 51 years old and has been incarcerated for over 25 years, including time served since her arrest in August 2000. She is currently serving Life Without the Possibility of Parole (LWOP) at Central California Women’s Facility.

At just 25, Susan made choices shaped by trauma, immaturity, and peer pressure. But who she is today is not who she was then.

For more than two decades, she has worked to completely change her life.

🔹 No serious rule violations — only one minor infraction in 2004
🔹 Security level reduced from 67 to the lowest possible score of 19
🔹 Completed 25+ rehabilitative and educational programs, including Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG), Freedom to Choose, Denial Management, and Behavioral Insight Seminar
🔹 Earned her GED as Valedictorian
🔹 Completed three Associate degrees with honors
🔹 Graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fresno State in 2025 with a B.A. in Social Science
🔹 Consistent work history and has lived in honor dorms since 2014

But Susan’s transformation is more than certificates and degrees.

She has done the hard internal work — developing emotional awareness, accountability, and empathy for the harm caused by her past. Through programs like VOEG, Denial Management, and Freedom to Choose, she has taken full responsibility and committed herself to lasting change. She continues that work today through writing and self-reflection focused on healing, identity, and growth.

The Court of Appeal acknowledged that Susan was not a major participant and did not act with reckless indifference. Yet because of legal limitations, her sentence remains unchanged.

That is why this moment matters.

Governor Gavin Newsom now has the opportunity to act.

Susan has demonstrated rehabilitation, remorse, and readiness. She has a strong reentry plan and a support system prepared to help her with housing, employment, and reintegration.

She is not asking for release without review — only the chance to be seen, evaluated, and considered for parole.

After more than 25 years of incarceration and transformation, she has earned that chance.
