Support Child Life Specialists! Stop hospitals from undercutting by hiring non-certified!!
The Issue
Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) complete thousands of hours of volunteering with children in a variety of settings, complete an unpaid internship, then sit for a rigorous certification exam. Many have to relocate to complete this unpaid internship, which adds to financial strain. Then, when finally hired, they are paid well below a living wage.
Whatever compensation and job security CCLS do have is NOW AT RISK!!!! Multiple hospitals across the country are hiring UN-trained, NON-certified individuals and calling them child life specialists!
As both a former resident training in Children’s hospitals AND as a father watching my child go through an extremely vulnerable time, certified child life specialists have continuously validated their role on the treatment team and honestly, impressed the hell out of me time and time again.
They use evidence-based techniques to:
- Reduce pain, anxiety, and medical trauma during procedures
- Prepare children for surgeries and tests in language they understand
- Support families through trauma, grief, and medical decision-making
- Improve health literacy and communication between parents, children, and care teams
Our Request:
We urge the United States House of Representatives to pass a resolution that:
• Recognizes Child Life Services as an essential component of pediatric healthcare
• Affirms that these services should be delivered by Certified Child Life Specialists
• Encourages healthcare systems to make these services standard practice
• Expands access so all children—regardless of location or background—can benefit
• Advances policies that ensure equitable access nationwide
Sign this petition to advocate for a future where no child’s psychological needs are overlooked during medical treatments. Your signature can be the catalyst for change, ensuring better healthcare and overall wellbeing for our children.
