The Issue

The decision to purchase fighter jets is a critical one, impacting Canada's defense strategy, financial resources, and international relationships. Unfortunately, the current plan to buy the F-35 from the United States comes with numerous drawbacks and risks that must not be overlooked.

The F-35 is notoriously expensive, both in terms of initial acquisition costs and long-term maintenance. Each jet comes with a price tag that significantly strains the Canadian defense budget, and the costs don't stop there. The F-35 requires extended periods of servicing and repairs, spending more time in the hanger than in the air—a hanger that must be climate-controlled, a critical drawback for Canada’s unique cold-weather climate.

In contrast, Sweden's Saab Gripen presents a practical and cost-effective alternative. The Swedish offer includes the possibility of building the Gripens domestically in Canada, which would not only create jobs but also ensure that the jet's updates and maintenance schedules are entirely under Canadian control. This partnership respects Canada's sovereignty by preventing dependency and offers a tailored solution for Canada's Arctic climate, for which the Gripen has been purpose-built.

Moreover, the Saab Gripen is cheaper, offering outstanding performance without compromising budgetary constraints. It provides us with the flexibility and sustainability we need for our national defense, fitting seamlessly into the logistical and environmental realities we face as a nation.

It's time for Canada to make a pragmatic and forward-thinking choice by investing in the Saab Gripen instead of the F-35. A vote for the Gripen is a vote for fiscal responsibility, military efficiency, and national sovereignty.

Sign this petition to urge the Canadian government to reconsider its decision and secure an aircraft that truly aligns with our national interests and climate conditions.
