Support Bill 277 for Fair Sentencing Reform
Support Bill 277 for Fair Sentencing Reform
The Issue
I am writing this petition to urge you to support and push for the passing of Bill 277, which aims to bring about fair sentencing reform. This issue is deeply personal to me as my husband is currently surviving a non-violent crime with charges that could potentially be impacted by this bill. I believe that Bill 277 has the power to not only help him but also countless others who are unjustly serving lengthy sentences.
Bill 277 seeks to address the inequities and harshness of our current criminal justice system by introducing reforms that promote fairness, proportionality, and rehabilitation. By advocating for this bill, we can take a significant step towards rectifying the flaws in our sentencing practices.
One of the primary goals of Bill 277 is to provide opportunities for early release or sentence reduction for individuals convicted of non-violent crimes. It recognizes that lengthy prison terms often do not serve as an effective deterrent nor contribute significantly to public safety. Instead, they burden taxpayers and perpetuate cycles of incarceration without addressing underlying issues.
Research supports the need for sentencing reform in order to create a more just system:
1) According to a report published by The Sentencing Project in 2020, there are currently over two million people incarcerated in the United States. This staggering number highlights how our country has become an outlier when it comes to incarceration rates compared with other developed nations.

2) A study conducted by The Brennan Center for Justice found that harsh sentencing policies have contributed significantly to mass incarceration without necessarily reducing crime rates.

3) Numerous studies have shown that alternatives such as community-based programs, drug treatment courts, and probationary measures can be more effective at reducing recidivism rates than long-term imprisonment.

By supporting Bill 277's proposed reforms, we can redirect our resources towards more effective and evidence-based approaches to criminal justice. This bill offers a chance for individuals like my husband to reintegrate into society, rebuild their lives, and contribute positively to their communities.
I implore you to consider the human impact of our current sentencing practices and take action by supporting Bill 277. Together, we can work towards a fairer and more compassionate criminal justice system that prioritizes rehabilitation over punishment.
Let’s give those with non parable offenses a chance to be recondition with chances to earn time off there sentence.
