The Issue

We, the undersigned, are community members, families, and pool users who respectfully request that the Town of Innisfail  Council reconsider the current design plans for the new Renovation plans at the Innisfail Aquatic Center change rooms.

The proposed or current layout includes only one universal change room, eliminating the traditional male and female change room options. While we understand and appreciate the intention to promote inclusivity and accessibility, many in our community feel this one-size-fits-all approach does not meet the diverse comfort, privacy, and cultural needs of all users.

🛑 For many, including:

Parents/ Caregivers  assisting children of a different gender,
Seniors or individuals with specific modesty or religious considerations,
People who have experienced trauma or need safe spaces to change privately,
…the lack of choice is a serious concern.

We are asking for a three-room solution:

A male change room,
A female change room,
A universal/family change room (as required for accessibility and inclusiveness).
This model is already in use in many other modern facilities across Alberta and provides dignity, respect, and choice for all.

We value accessibility and privacy  and believe that both can exist in the same space when thoughtful design is applied.

📢 Please sign this petition to ask The Town of Innisfail’s Council, Mayor’s Office, or Recreation Department to:

Pause or reconsider the current change room design plan,
Engage in public consultation, and
Commit to building or maintaining a three-room model at the current Aquatic Center

Let’s ensure our public spaces are truly inclusive  by offering options that honor everyone’s needs.

🚨 Why We Must Act Now
The Town of Innisfail has stated that the decision to move forward with a single universal change room is already finalized, with renovations scheduled to begin on Monday. However, most community members who regularly use the pool were not made aware of the full extent of these changes until June 28. Despite the town's claim that the process was open to public input, many feel they were left in the dark, and now there's growing concern and public outrage. This is our last chance to speak up and ask the Town of Innisfil to reconsider and prioritize transparency, dignity, and choice for all users. We must act before construction begins.
