The Issue

I am writing as a parent deeply concerned about the trial-and-error approach commonly used when prescribing mental-health medications to children. Many families experience unnecessary side effects, behavioral changes, and emotional distress simply because medications are not matched to a child’s individual genetic profile.
In Kansas, however, access to such crucial testing is not universally available to our children who are being considered for psychiatric medications. Pharmacogenetic testing can illuminate how a child's unique genetic composition may affect their response to specific medications, potentially saving them from unnecessary suffering and ineffective treatments. According to research conducted by the Mayo Clinic, patients who undergo pharmacogenetic testing experience a 30% reduction in trial and error medication changes, leading to better outcomes and fewer adverse drug reactions.

The lack of access to pharmacogenetic testing particularly affects children who are grappling with mental health challenges. Current statistics from the National Center for Children in Poverty reveal that over 20% of children in Kansas live below the poverty line and may not have the means to afford such testing. Unmatched medications not only impede their therapeutic progress but also exacerbate their hardships.

We propose a legislative initiative to ensure that pharmacogenetic testing, such as GeneSight, is made readily accessible and covered by insurance for all Kansas children considered for psychiatric medication. This coverage should not depend on their economic background, thereby ensuring equitable access to more effective and safer treatment options.

By advocating for this change, we can ensure a future where our children's mental health treatments are precise and informed by their genetic profiles. Let's reduce the anguish caused by mismatched medications and provide a brighter, healthier future for the children of Kansas.

Join me in urging our legislators to prioritize this initiative and make pharmacogenetic testing part of the standard care protocol for pediatric psychiatric evaluations. Your signature can pave the way for a healthier tomorrow for all Kansas children.
