‘The Puffinbox @ Whitesands Beach’ is a small family run business in its fifth year of providing quality mobile catering at Whitesands Beach. Our entire family, including our little ones, are deeply invested in this venture. Running this business together is more than just work; it's a labour of love.

That said, the Scottish Weather poses challenges that impact our operations, and financial viability.

We are looking to add a Mobile Tent Sauna which is already purchased to our offering and we would appreciate your support by signing this petition.

Setting up a tent sauna alongside our catering trailer at Whitesands Beach would offer a unique and valuable addition to the beach experience. We believe it meets the Rangers’ Core roles and responsibilities, of visitor engagement and public enjoyment. It is a way to really connect with nature. We have run The Puffin Box@Whitesands beach for 5 years now and believe we have helped keep the beach clean and everyday pick up and remove visitors rubbish as there are no bins. 

Why Whitesands:

Whitesansds Beach has safe water for bathers.  

SEPA rated Excellent for water cleanliness.

It is one of the most accessible East Lothian Beaches, a very short walk to the beach from the car park. 

It has a cycle path to it and is a lovely walk from Dunbar. 

There is ample parking.

It would subscribe to Heath and Social Care Partnerships helping people - both locals and visitors.

Health Issues: we would provide a defibrillator accessible to anyone on the beach. 

There would also be trained First Aid person on site when in operation, who is a Coast Guard Rescue Officer (CRO) Volunteer. The CROs are trained for water rescue too.

The Tent would be removed from site every day, with no trace of activity left behind operated only on the beach on sand. 

We have full planning permission for our Food Trailer so would seek the same for the Tent. 

Customers will have to follow a code of practice when using the Sauna, to ensure safety & enjoyment for all.  

All necessary insurance and waivers would be in place. It is our understanding from the Sauna manufacture that these tent saunas are operated in every Local Authority except East Lothian Council. These Saunas are very popular and we have many people asking us to run it as they are very excited about it.

The mobile tent sauna would be sustainably operated, ensuring minimal environmental impact and prioritising the preservation of Whitesands Beach's natural beauty. We would ensure that it adheres to all local regulations and meets safety standards. It would also allow us to achieve our goal of running the catering trailer on batteries rather than a petrol generator to minimise environmental impact.

By enabling us to introduce a mobile tent sauna, East Lothian Council can help us create a more resilient business, less weather-dependent, thereby supporting local entrepreneurship. This move would not only benefit our family business but also boost local tourism with an enhanced beach experience, combined with our freshly made food and refreshments offerings.
