Support a Skatepark in Future Burrard Slopes Park

Support a Skatepark in Future Burrard Slopes Park
The Issue
We would appreciate your support for locating a skatepark adjacent to the corner of 5th Avenue and Pine Street in Vancouver’s Fairview neighbourhood.
On April 13th, the Vancouver Park Board Commissioners will consider a proposed plan for the new Burrard Slopes Park from staff that includes a skatepark. This park design has been prepared with input from local residents, and it offers amenities and recreation opportunities for a variety of people.

The site is directly connected to the well‑used Arbutus Greenway active transportation pathway and is easily accessible by several bus routes along West 4th Avenue, making it a natural and highly accessible location for a skatepark.
Currently, only one park west of Cambie Street—Quilchena Park—includes a skatepark. Staff are proposing a medium-sized skateboard spot rather than a larger skateboard park. We support this proposal because a mid-sized facility can share the park with other features that will attract people of many ages.
The nearby West 4th commercial district is home to multiple skate, snowboard, and bike shops, reflecting strong local interest in active recreation. A short distance away, Granville Island has also hosted the well‑used, rain-covered Green Ramp every winter since 2019, built and maintained by the Vancouver Skateboard Coalition.
Burrard Slopes Park will be a welcome addition to this area as the City of Vancouver plans for a significant increase in residents and employees, as outlined in the Broadway Plan approved by City Council in 2022.
With your support, this skatepark can build on the positive community impact seen at the City’s recently completed skateparks in China Creek South Park and Collingwood Park. This is an important opportunity to create a safe, inclusive, and much‑needed recreation space for youth, families, and active residents in our community.
Vancouver’s CitySkate Skateboard Amenities Strategy outlines recommendations for expanding skateboarding opportunities across the city, including adding more neighbourhood‑scale skateparks in underserved areas. A skatepark in Burrard Slopes Park is consistent with these recommendations. The full strategy is available here: https://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/skateboard-amenities-strategy.aspx
ABOUT US: We are Cameron French and Michael Gordon, volunteers with the Vancouver Skateboard Coalition. For almost 30 years, the Coalition has brought together skateboarders and their families to organize events and work with Parks staff on the planning and maintenance of skateparks. We live in nearby Kitsilano and would greatly appreciate this facility because existing opportunities for skateboarding are a significant distance from our homes. We are also committed to ensuring those using this park are good neighbours.
