Support a Rainbow Crosswalk in Bethel, CT!

Support a Rainbow Crosswalk in Bethel, CT!
The Issue
Bethel CT Pride is in the preliminary phase of evaluating public support for adding a rainbow crosswalk to downtown Bethel, Connecticut.
Since 2017, Bethel CT Pride has provided supportive and safe events and environments for LGBQTIA+ people. We strive to listen to the community and spearhead initiatives that affirm and celebrate Bethel’s queer residents and visitors. A rainbow crosswalk helps those individuals know that Bethel is committed to the safety, health, and affirmation of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Crosswalks help make sure everyone can safely access public spaces. At a time when queer people's right to even exist in public is being challenged, this signals to folks that Bethel is committed to making this a welcome town for everyone.
Areas of consideration for a rainbow crosswalk include town-managed sites such as:
- The crosswalk at Wooster and School St., the first crosswalk traversed by the Bethel CT Pride parade in 2017; OR
- One of the two crosswalks on School St., next to the site of the ongoing Bethel CT Pride Celebration; OR
- Other options presented by the community with workable installment
Only sites that are wholly managed by the Town of Bethel will be considered. Greenwood Avenue is Route 302 and its crosswalks are under state control.
If you believe a rainbow crosswalk would be a vital addition to Bethel, we ask that you sign this petition to show your support.
If we reach 200 or more signatures, we will initiate a feasibility analysis to review items including cost, source funding, implementation logistics, and upkeep of a MUTCD-compliant decorative crosswalk that adheres to all standards set forth by the Federal Highway Administration. Findings will be incorporated into a presentation and a request put forth to the Town of Bethel.
Communities across the state, including Norwalk, Westport, New Milford, Litchfield, and Middletown, have all installed rainbow crosswalks to support their LGBQTIA+ community members and visitors—we would love for Bethel to stand united with these wonderful towns.
Thank you!
