The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, staff members, and community residents, respectfully urge the Madison Local School District Board of Education to revise the 2026–2027 academic calendar to begin the school year after Labor Day rather than in mid-August and end before Memorial Day.

This request is made to better support student well-being, family stability, staff, attendance, fiscal responsibility, and overall learning conditions within our district.

Why a Post–Labor Day Start Matters-

  • Student Well-Being & Readiness: A later start allows students the opportunity for adequate rest and recovery before the school year begins. This helps reduce burnout, supports mental health, and improves focus and readiness to learn from day one.
  • Improved Learning Conditions: August heat often creates uncomfortable classroom environments, particularly in older buildings experiencing air conditioning challenges. Starting after Labor Day would help ensure students begin the year in a more conducive learning environment.
  • Relief for Working Families: Many families rely on summer childcare programs and camps that run through late August. An early August start creates financial loss and logistical hardship for working parents who must rearrange or duplicate childcare plans.
  • Better Attendance & Engagement: Mid-August start dates frequently result in increased absences due to previously scheduled family commitments and end-of-summer events. Beginning after Labor Day would allow for a stronger, more consistent start to the academic year.
  • Kindergarten Access & Financial Equity: Recent changes to the kindergarten age cutoff have significantly impacted families with mid-to-late August and September birthdays. Many parents who planned for kindergarten enrollment are now facing the unexpected cost of an additional year of preschool or childcare, or are considering alternative options such as homeschooling. A post–Labor Day start could allow more students to enroll as originally planned, easing financial strain and increasing enrollment-based district funding.
  • Instructional Hours & Budget Responsibility: Madison Local Schools already exceed the State of Ohio’s required instructional hours—even when accounting for all allotted calamity days. The district could responsibly reduce the calendar by up to 18 days and still maintain five full calamity days while remaining compliant with state requirements. To achieve a post–Labor Day start, we would not need to reduce the calendar by the full 18 days, and no additional days would need to be added at the end of the year to meet state requirements. Reducing excess early-year instructional hours would also help lower building operation, bussing and staffing costs, supporting the district during ongoing budget challenges.
  • Community Alignment & Timing: We anticipate neighboring districts may follow suit, strengthening regional alignment for families.

Additionally, with the upcoming changes to district buildings, bussing, and school schedules, this transition presents an ideal opportunity to implement a fresh start for the 2026–2027 school year.

We Respectfully Ask the Board of Education To:

  • Reevaluate the current academic calendar model
  • Survey families and staff regarding preferred start dates
  • Implement a post–Labor Day start- Memorial Day ending- beginning with the 2026–2027 school year

This petition is not about reducing instructional quality. It is about creating a healthier learning environment, easing financial strain on families, strengthening attendance, and making fiscally responsible decisions that support both students, staff and the broader Madison community.
