Support a Community Darkroom in Hackney

Support a Community Darkroom in Hackney
The Issue
We’re working to set up a community-run analog photography darkroom in Hackney, and we’re looking to show that there’s real interest and need for a space like this.
The darkroom would be run by RCA and GSA alumni, with a focus on sustainable analog printing, large-format work, and shared learning. The aim is to create an affordable, welcoming space where people can make work, learn from each other, and build community - not just a pay-per-hour lab.
What we want to build
A shared darkroom for analog photography, using more sustainable and low-toxicity processes where possible
Facilities for large-format printing
Affordable access for individuals, collectives, and community groups
Workshops and skill-sharing sessions, open to all, with a focus on supporting underprivileged and low-income participants
Alongside the darkroom, we want to run a small gallery space:
Exhibitions selected through open calls
Residencies and solo shows developed from work made in the darkroom
A space for talks, events, and informal gatherings
The idea is that the darkroom and gallery feed into each other - work gets made, shown, talked about, and shared, all in the same place.
Why this matters
Access to affordable analog darkrooms in London is becoming harder and harder, especially for people without financial backing. At the same time, there are fewer spaces that support slow, hands-on making and genuine collaboration.
This project is about:
Keeping analog photography alive and accessible
Sharing skills and resources
Supporting early-career artists
Creating a space that feels open, social, and rooted in its local community
We’re not trying to build something exclusive or high-end. This is about making a space that people can actually use - whether they’re just starting out or have been working in photography for years.
If you’d like to see a community darkroom like this in Hackney, please sign and share this petition. Showing support helps us demonstrate demand and move the project forward.
Thank you for backing community-led creative spaces.
