The Issue

Sainsbury’s has already made important progress in reducing food waste, with a goal to cut surplus food sent to anaerobic digestion by 50% by 2030 and millions of meals redistributed to people in need through partnerships with organisations such as Neighbourly and Olio. However, with the scale of today’s climate and food waste challenges, we believe Sainsbury’s can aim even higher.

We are calling on Sainsbury’s to increase its food waste reduction target from 50% to 60% by 2030 by removing surplus food from shelves earlier, ensuring that more safe, edible food can be redistributed to people in need before it reaches the point where it can no longer be donated. Sainsbury’s has already invested in innovative solutions to prevent food waste and has significantly increased the amount of surplus food redistributed to communities. Setting a more ambitious target would build on this progress and position Sainsbury’s as a leader in sustainable retail.

A 60% target could help prevent more edible food from going to waste, reduce environmental impacts, and support more people through food redistribution initiatives. Most importantly, it would demonstrate that Sainsbury’s listens to its customers and is willing to take bold action for the future of our planet.
