Alanna Topham started this petition to Supermarkets and

I’m writing as a single mother with three children 1,4 & 7. I can’t get a grocery shopping delivery or click and collect slot as I am not considered vulnerable enough and am left in a position wondering how I’m going to manage to feed my family and keep them safe.

I’m pushed into a situation where I have to take my three children to the supermarket/shops where they run around touching things, putting their fingers up their noses and being kids. However much you try to tell a teething 1 year old, 4 and 7 year old not to touch their faces they do anyway. How can I protect them, myself and the rest of you all?

Restrictions are becoming more stringent with strict social distancing measures for our protection. Sainsbury’s allow one adult in at a time and Tescos told a single mother to leave her children outside or she couldn’t go in. If you are allowed in the supermarkets how are you meant to shop safely?

We’re on universal credit like many other families. We have to shop very carefully and now can’t hunt for the usual bargains we would find to make our money stretch. This means families and children are going without.

The replacement £10 school meals voucher I have been given for only one child although I have two at school is redeemable in Tescos where I cannot shop. Even if we could shop we are restricted to 80 items, the same as a single person. This hasn’t been thought through.

Supermarket deliveries should be available to us with a larger shopping allowance to accommodate larger households. I have tried repeatedly to contact the supermarkets with no success and feel frustrated knowing and seeing healthy OAPs who have family close by and only need a few bags of shopping a week having access to the online delivery slots.

It feels as if people in my situation haven’t been considered at all. If you are a single person it’s much easier to cover your needs by getting a neighbour or community scheme to pick up a few bags of shopping for you a week. But if you’re a single parent family on a low budget needing nappies etc it’s much harder to orchestrate this.

This situation puts us all at serious risk. There’s so far no consideration for single mothers who are parenting 24/7. If single mothers/parents come down with the Coronavirus what happens to their children?

Usually single parents have underlying health conditions because they are so exhausted parenting on their own and many have been for years. This is stressful and with young children you hardly ever sleep, both of which compromise your immune system.

I have to get the yearly flu jab, have three autoimmune disorders and am in the at risk group. My hair is falling out due to stress and now  as well as home schooling, parenting three young children alone I have to worry about whether we will be able to get the food we need and then even if we can somehow, whether we can afford the items that have been found.

Who looks after my children if I’m sick?

We are vulnerable and need help. There must be millions of other families similar to mine who need to be heard. Please sign and help to effect change.
