Call to Uphold Hiring of DEI Specialist in Cherokee County Schools

The Issue

Our mission is to convince the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) Board in Georgia that a proposed resolution banning CRT and teaching of the 1619 project is unnecessary. They are not part of the Cherokee County School Board policy or curriculum, nor are there plans to add them. We strongly oppose this proposed resolution.

Furthermore, any demand to rescind the hiring of the highly experienced and well liked Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) administrator Cecelia Lewis, makes obvious a willingness to impair all children, parents, and the teaching community of Cherokee County, Georgia. We oppose rescinding her hiring, and strongly support upholding it.

32% of the 42,200 CCSD student body are American Indian, Asian American, Bicultural, Black, or Latino. Approximately 13,500 students across our county have personal, cultural, and social experiences we can learn more from.

To be successful in life and their future careers, our children need to understand the world beyond Cherokee County. Diversity leads to new ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship. By rejecting this, the school board would be putting students at a major disadvantage.

It’s important for all children to learn about history from multiple perspectives, based on how factual events impacted people from different cultures in different ways. The discomfort of adults in seeing and teaching various perspectives should not stand in the way of children having compassion for and deeper knowledge of one another.
