Marion high school should not go continue school up to June 11th
The Issue
Marion High School should not continue school all the way until June 11th. It is the end of the year and all the students wish to be done with school. The derecho this past summer influenced the day when we could return to school, and we were not able to return until mid September. Kim Reynolds allowed us to have a waiver signed saying that we did not have to go to school through the summer, but instead, the superintendents of Marion Independence decided to decline the offer and are making students continue their education till June 11th, which is 2 weeks longer than how a normal school year should last. Students are already drained from the stressful year, from being online during the start of the pandemic, to hybrid when school started, to all students back at school, to hybrid again, and now finally we have all returned to school. As a student, I am using my voice to speak out against the June 11th date and I am hoping that others will, too. The superintendent’s argument is that parents will be upset if we do not continue our education into summer; however, vacation plans may be disrupted because of how late we go into June. Parents may not be able to vacation with their children until later because of how late school gets out. One may think that other schools are going to continue educating into the summer like Marion Independence, but as far as we know, Marion Independence is only school district that hasn’t accepted Kim Reynold’s waiver. This means that schools all around us will have their children out of school and enjoying their summer before Marion students can—whether they even started school before us or not. Students have also been working hard all year and deserve a break. Going to school for that long into the summer will make even the hardest working students feel less inclined to work hard on their school. I hope that students will help use their voice and speak out against going to June 11th.
