Keep the regular School Start Times For Pre-K Through Grade 12
The Issue
Starting the school year of 2017-2018, Barrington school district 220 is planning on starting all schools later. The school board has decided that the Early Learning Center and the Elementry students start before the Highschool and the Middle school students. The Middle school students start after the Elementry and High school students. What impacts could effect this bell schedule? Probably many different things. I, as a high school student, think that keeping the 7:20-2:35 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday time is the better option to go with. I go to school at 7:20, I go through all eight of my classes and then at 2:35 I catch the bus to go home. I get home around 3:00 and I do my homework and study for tests and quizzes around that time. This gives me enough time to complete my homework and study before I get tired around the time I go to bed, which is 9:00 p.m. For the students that stay after school, including the football team, tennis team, swim team etc. get home later. If we change the start time later, the practices will start later and end later. This means, the ones who stay after school will have to stay up around 8:00-10:00 at night to work on their studies. Think about how late the students will get home if the schools start later.
Pros: Teens may be more likely to get the recommended amount of sleep.
Teens may be less likely to depend on caffeine to stay awake during the day
Getting home may reduce the amount of time some teens are home alone,
This could decrease the like chlidhood teens will engage in unhealthy activities.
Now for the Cons:
Delaying junior high or high school start times would likely impact the schedule for all schools within a district. ( This will effect all schools in district 220.)
Teens would get out of school later in the afternoons, which could pose problems for teens who provide childcare to younger siblings,
Students who participate in sports and extra-curricular activities would get home much later in the evenings
Teens may stay up even later if they don't have to wake for school at an earlier time.
Another reason why students are not getting enough sleep is because, the parents do not enforce the bed-time schedule.
I said my reason, now it's time for you to say yours. Please sign this petition and hopefully we will get through the Board of Education of 220 to postpone and go back to the drawing board!
Thank You!!
