Super Bowl XLVI Players: Visibly Oppose Indiana's "Right To Work" legislation at Super Bowl XLVI
Super Bowl XLVI Players: Visibly Oppose Indiana's "Right To Work" legislation at Super Bowl XLVI
The Issue
In the past year, a coordinated effort has been launched on a state-by-state level to eliminate Labor Unions and whittle away workplace standards and protections gained over one hundred years of labor negotiating and struggle. Masquerading as "Right To Work " legislation, these bills, once passed into law, seek to impinge on worker's ability to organize in their own interests against the demands of their employers.
Notable in recent times is move by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to strip public sector labor unions of their collective bargaining voice, supposedly in the name of fiscal austerity.
"Right To Work" legislation is now being moved through the State Legislature of Indiana, the seat of this year's Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and The New York Giants.
As the sporting eyes of the nation turn to Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5th, it is notable that the two teams involved in the Nation's big sports night are active members of the NFL Players Association, their own labor organizing structure for negotiating with NFL Management.
It would be a sorely missed opportunity if these two organized teams participate in the Super Bowl in a state seeking to strip organizing rights from their workers with out making a strong decisive visible comment to their Indiana fans in support of their organizing rights.
DeMaurice Smith, Executive Director of the NFL Players association has gone on record on behalf of the NFLPA as opposing Indiana's efforts to pass "Right To Work" legislation: http://tinyurl.com/7ywzgdt
We, the undersigned Fans of NFL Football and supporters of Workers Rights to Organize, call on the the NFLPA, The New York Giants and The New England Patriots to take some visibly demonstrative action on Super Bowl Sunday in support of All workers rights to organize. The hard-working fans of a vanishing middle-class who support the NFL Players with their dollars can only benefit from your very public articulation of the fact that you stand with them as working people striving to keep their voices alive and heard on the workplace. We, the Fans, back you with our support.
