Make the road outside Usworth Colliery Primary School safer with crossings and a 20 zone.
The Issue
Usworth Colliery Primary School is attended by many children in Washington with a nursery based on site. The road outside of the school currently has a 30mph speed restriction although a fair amount of drivers exceed the speed limit. There is a small car park located at the back of the school but this is not big enough to accommodate all of the parents picking their children up by car. Many parents park on the pavement or on the road, as there are no proper crossings outside the school i.e. zebra/pelican crossings, many children have no choice but to cross the road from behind parked cars.
Usworth Colliery Primary School has a specialist base for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). One of the issues for autistic children is a lack of danger awareness, this makes the lack of crossings even more dangerous.
Sunderland City Council website says 'We will continue to promote measures that will lead to a reduction in the number of injury crashes and will seek to manage and improve these measures, giving priority to making our roads, footpaths and cycle ways safer for children.' If they truly want to make roads safer for our children they should reduce the speed limit to a maximum of 20mph and put in at least one crossing outside the school so our children can feel safer and more confident crossing the road before and after school.
