All,

I hope all is well and all 4,187 of you who signed the petition to stop the Dakota Pacific development at Kimball Junction had a great holiday.

Despite some “radio silence” recently, please know that Friends of Summit County and the broader community has remained very engaged in our opposition to the Dakota Pacific (DP) project currently proposed.

Here are highlights of recent activities and plans for what’s coming next.

FIRST, members of Friends of Summit County met with Dakota Pacific’s leadership January 6.

During the meeting, we reiterated the key points made by community members at the County Council meeting in early December that generated a huge public turnout (THANKS!). We also informed Dakota Pacific that we would continue to analyze their proposals, communicate our findings to the community at large, and engage the community for key meetings and any vote.

Dakota Pacific is currently working on a revision to its Kimball Junction development proposal, and has the goal of prompting a County Council vote (on the new proposal) in three to four months.

SECOND, Friends of Summit County’s letter to the Summit County Council.

On January 19, we sent a three-page letter to the Council detailing our positions on a variety of matters. Our letter stated that the community’s demands related to the project, as expressed at the December meeting, must be thoroughly addressed by Dakota Pacific.

Our letter also informed the Council that our Friends group will continue to pay close attention to the Dakota Pacific project over the coming weeks, and that we encourage the County to communicate regularly with us about project developments so we can keep the community fully informed.

In addition, we let the Council know we believe there is a clear and urgent need to institute a temporary development moratorium until the County’s land-use policies can be reviewed as a whole and before additional large-scale, ad hoc projects are approved. We advised the Council that Friends of Summit County intends to rally community support for such a moratorium.

We expect to meet with the Council on February 9 to discuss the contents of our letter in more detail.

THIRD, we will meet again with Dakota Pacific this week.

At the request of Dakota Pacific, Friends of Summit County will meet this week with the developer (date and time to be determined) to discuss specifics of their proposed project. We will share details after the meeting.

To sum up, Friends of Summit County continues to fight the good fight and advocate on behalf of our community and our quality of life. We greatly appreciate your continued support and attention and will be in touch with updates as things evolve.
