SAVE SUMMIT PARK'S HIGH DESERT FOREST

SAVE SUMMIT PARK'S HIGH DESERT FOREST
The Issue
Thank you for caring about the forest in Summit Park.
On 9-8-20, Basin Recreation implemented what has become a very aggressive plan to thin our forest titled, "Forest Health & Fuels Reduction Project" See this link: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/3c0fd9472b9d4f1c854388ec429fb683
* The models used to "sell" this project to the authorities were NOT high desert forest. Rather, the models used were the northwest woods where trees regenerate exponentially faster.
* The removal of dead trees & the clearing of the forest floor would itself go a very long way to mitigate fire risk. However, Basin Rec's crews have walked right past the trees laying on the ground to cut gorgeous, healthy old growth trees with diameters as large as 30". WHY?
* So many trees have already been cut that erosion control will be all but impossible next spring when the snow melts. Some of us Summit Park locals have spent countless hours over the years to maintain these priceless trails.
* These trails have become ever more sacred for all of us during these challenging times. Indiscriminately cutting so many healthy trees, including the 'downhill trees' which literally hold up the trail from sliding down the hill is unconscionable.
* In recent days, Basin Rec's crews have built countless bonfire sized piles using the cutting scraps they say they plan to burn. Considering a controlled burn in Summit Park makes no sense at all and borders on complete insanity.
Basin Rec states that: "A shaded fuel break is defined as the removal of all dead standing and large live “qualifying trees” (greater than 3in Diameter at Breast Height (“DBH”) but less than 10in DBH), downed woody debris, and the removal of all ladder fuels.".
* Basin Rec sure seems to have misled us. They have not abided by what they sold people to get this project approved.
* WE AS BASIN PROPERTY OWNERS, RESIDENTS AND CONCERNED CITIZENS, DEMAND THAT BASIN RECREATION IMMEDIATELY CEASE AND DESIST CUTTING LIVE TREES. THE DEAD GROWTH ON THE FOREST FLOOR MUST BE CLEARED FIRST. WE INSIST ON HAVING DIRECT INPUT INCLUDING A VOTING VOICE PRIOR TO ANY FURTHER CUTTING OF LIVE TREES COMMENCES IN SUMMIT PARK.
