An off hand comment made on the show "Two Broke Girls" showed great ignorance regarding the seriousness of suicide. During the latest episode (aired 11/21/2011) the character played by Kat Dennings made the comment "they will find her hung by the fireside with care" regarding another of the episodes characters. Had the shows writers or actors ever been exposed first hand to the affects of suicide on surviors they would not have chosen to go for the cheap laugh in the face of the painful reality so many people face. The statistics below illustrate why this is not a laughing matter.

*Over 36,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year.
In 2008 (latest available data), there were 36,035 reported suicide deaths.
Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years in the United States (29,668 suicides).
Currently, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.
A person dies by suicide about every 15 minutes in the United States.
Every day, approximately 99 Americans take their own life.
Ninety percent of all people who die by suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.
There are four male suicides for every female suicide, but three times as many females as males attempt suicide.
There are an estimated 8-25 attempted suicides for every suicide death.
