Tuition Discount for Suffolk University Students
The Issue
With the recent transition to work virtually for the latter half of the semester due to the COVID-19 virus, students are urging the university to consider a discount to this semester's tuition. The school agreed to refund students living on campus, but needs to take into account the rent being paid by students in off campus housing, as the only reason they are paying for rent is to attend class in person. There are students involved in internships who are "paid" in academic credit, but are forced to also work remotely due to said internships' executive board, so why exactly are they paying for credits? These are just some of the concerns to students.
Furthermore, many students and families have lost their jobs or are on unpaid leave due to shutdowns related to quarantine procedures. Not only are people now struggling to pay their bills, they are paying for an education that is completely hindered.
According to AffordableColleges.com, the average online degree costs $30,000. Suffolk's tuition for a four year degree costs over $152,000. Students at Suffolk are paying for the perks associated with the school, like face to face interaction with the instructor, technology, social interaction and team building, networking events and simply events in general, etc. Seniors specifically, benefit from being in the classroom to get the experience they need for jobs.
One student's reaction writes, "Broadcast journalism students depend on using filming and editing equipment provided by Suffolk University in order fulfill major requirements AND in order to succeed in our careers, how will online classes provide us that same experiential education that YOU capitalize on when recruiting students? How do you expect us to 'make our way' when all the resources to forge that path are taken from us? . . . I, like many other Suffolk students, have put so much time and effort to make it to this point in my college career and I am at a loss for words right now."
Our neighbor, Emerson College, is providing a discount to their students' tuition for the current semester.
The students are uniting to bring forward this concern. The goal of this petition is for Suffolk to supply a $5,000 to $10,000 credit to every Suffolk on SU Pay.
