Encourage Suffolk University to Declare Sanctuary Status/Safe Zones

Encourage Suffolk University to Declare Sanctuary Status/Safe Zones
The Issue
Our goal is to encourage Suffolk University to implement safety measures and precautions for ALL students on campus. As we are located in the heart of Boston, with many different police and law enforcement agencies such Boston Police, Suffolk Police, & ICE surrounding our campus at all times. This location increases the likelihood for the detainment and arrest of immigrant students.
Recently MIT has warned international students that federal immigration officials may visit their work sites to verify that their employment is directly related to their studies. Students have been detained and imprisoned for allegedly “stealing information to bring back to their home countries” on school breaks. Boston and Cambridge’s status of “sanctuary cities” now seem to be nothing more than a title for show.
Boston Police, as well as Suffolk University Police, have been proven to not only target undocumented people, but additionally people of color, those of lower socioecnomic status, and those practicing non-Christan faiths. The Boston Police have been exposed in the recent months of collaborating with ICE, going as far as exchanging information and emails. Last spring, a Suffolk Police Officer was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct in Braintree. Creating safety for all Suffolk University students is an urgent necessity that needs to be addressed for the Suffolk community. This necessity becomes more clear given both Suffolk Police and Boston Police have engaged in abuses of power in recent years.
As we know, ICE’s continuous terror and surveillance are apart of a larger attack by the Trump Administration to continue their terror on undocumented people, immigrants, and people of color in America. Because of these developments, and Suffolk University's commitment to protecting and advocating for all their students, we, The Marxist Student Association, hope to work with Suffolk Administration, Student Affairs and President Marisa Kelly to ensure ALL students at Suffolk remain safe and within a welcoming environment on and around the Suffolk campus.
Our Demands:
- Require Suffolk safe zones where campus and local authorities cannot ask or demand to see students’ immigration status.
- Restrict immigration agents’ access to campuses.
- Prohibit campus security or campus police from collaborating with federal immigration authorities for the purposes of enforcement or information.
- Provide and advocate resources and information for immigrant students and their families.
