**To make a strong case, we are focusing on collecting signatures from people that live in the Soquel Union Elementary School District.  If you don't live within the district boundaries but want to help, please consider sharing this petition with contacts that do live in the district.**

In 2019 USA Today posted an article naming Santa Cruz as the least affordable place in the entire country for teachers to live.  SUESD currently has the lowest staff salary of all districts in Santa Cruz County (which is already a very low-paying county).  The last raise the teachers received was in 2018 and was 2%.  

The effect of this is that the district is unable to attract and struggles to retain high-quality educators.  Last year, our district had a 28.8% staff turnover rate, and this year is projected to be higher.  We are in a crisis that directly affects our students' access to equitable education.

We are asking that the SUESD  bring in FCMAT to help create a budget that allows teachers (and all staff) to be compensated at a rate that allows them to afford to continue working in the district.  FCMAT (Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team) is a state-run organization whose primary mission is to help California’s local K-14 educational agencies identify, prevent and resolve financial, operational and data management challenges by providing management assistance and professional learning opportunities. FCMAT’s services are used not just to help avert fiscal crisis, but to promote sound financial practices, support the training and development of chief business officials, and help to create efficient organizational operations. FCMAT’s data management services are used to help local educational agencies (LEAs) meet state reporting responsibilities, improve data quality, and inform instructional program decisions.

By signing this petition I am asking SUESD to have FCMAT come in and review, refine, and assist with the district budget.

Los servicios de FCMAT se utilizan no solo para ayudar a evitar la crisis fiscal, sino también para promover prácticas financieras sólidas, apoyar la capacitación y el desarrollo de los principales funcionarios de negocios y ayudar a crear operaciones organizacionales eficientes.
