Substandard Housing Development at 25 Osborne Road, Amberley

Substandard Housing Development at 25 Osborne Road, Amberley
The issue
We, the undersigned residents of Amberley and concerned community members, are writing to express our deep concerns regarding the ongoing subdivision development at 25 Osborne Road, Amberley. The placement of relocatable houses on this property falls significantly below the standards required for the surrounding area and poses safety and environmental risks that require urgent attention.
In the past two to three years, multiple relocatable houses have been placed on the site. These homes are visibly deteriorating, with broken windows, unsecured roofing, and exposed elements. Some of these homes are in such a state of disrepair that they are hazardous to the community, including instances of ongoing fire alarms and loose roofing iron that causes excessive noise during windy conditions. The land is poorly maintained, creating a fire risk during summer, and a third relocatable house has recently been added, further exacerbating these issues.
We are particularly concerned about the developer's plans to add eight more relocatable homes, which could further degrade the area's visual appeal and safety standards. Additionally, if these properties are rented out as investment homes, the community may face potential social challenges, further detracting from Amberley's traditional character of high-quality, permanent residences.
In light of these issues, we call on the Hurunui District Council to take the following actions:
- Conduct an immediate inspection of the site to assess the safety and building standards of the existing relocatable homes.
- Reconsider and halt the current plans to introduce more substandard homes to the site.
- Ensure that future developments in Amberley adhere to the community's high standards for safety, quality, and aesthetics
By signing this petition, we are urging the Hurunui District Council to take action and prevent further degradation of our community.
