The issue

Ferry Fairness For Tasmanians

Throughout my political career, I have heard numerous concerns from island residents who want to visit the mainland with their car. Whether it's to see family and friends, attend medical appointments, or simply go shopping, the island residents rely heavily on the ferry service. However, the costs to use the ferry, which is considered a part of our national highway, are disproportionately high.

Yes,  the Federal Government does subsidize our ferry service  with the “Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme”. It is designed for equalisation, it is not based on resident-only relief, particularly as cost of living prices soar annually.

The term ‘Equalisation’ has been criticized by Tasmanian residents and lobby groups for many years. It does not achieve true price parity with a road. It is outdated, no longer fit for purpose and disadvantages Tasmanians

Operator TT-Line also uses yield management software. If you are booking during peak season or at short notice, the base fare rises. Why as residents should we cop that? Instead, raise the fares of visitors and tourists especially during peak season. Do not forget the Great Spirit of Tasmania replacement and berthing fiasco which has blown out by approximately $500 million and paid by us, the tax payers of Tasmania

Subsidising ferry fares for Tasmanian residents is not a gift but entitlement of fairness. Similar models exist both internationally and closer to home, including subsidies for residents of Bruny Island. This is not about funding a luxury cruise or supporting tourism. It is about ensuring essential connectivity, protecting livelihoods, and supporting the wellbeing of people who call Tasmania home.

Any subsidy should be strictly limited to permanent residents.

Please sign this petition to urge our State Government to take this issue seriously and act. If we act now, this issue can and will play a significant role in the next State election in 2029.
