Why this petition matters

We, the 5th graders of Children's Workshop School in New York City, are asking to put up a monument at Stuyvesant Town. We want people to know that the original owners, Met Life, discriminated against Black people at Stuy Town, and white residents protested to get that changed. Black veterans fought in court for change. We want a memorial so New Yorkers will remember the people who fought for integration.

Stuyvesant Town was originally built for veterans in the late 1940s. Imagine if you were a Black soldier and you fought bravely in World War II, but then were denied housing that white soldiers had access to. You would think about how bad and cruel that is, because you are being discriminated against because of your skin color.

They should build this monument because Black people shouldn’t have been discriminated against, because they fought on our side in the war along with white people, and we all deserve to be treated equally. People might forget about this historical event. But Black people are still discriminated against, so we should build this monument to commemorate the people who fought, and inspire future activists.
