The Kumon Learning Logos is demoralizing to children, and paints them in a negative light.

The Issue

We, the middle school student body of AAE, have concluded that Kumon Learning needs to change its logo to become more inviting to children. During our discussion in Digital Design class, we discussed the audience and the connotation the logo creates.

We feel it makes children look "clueless and moronic." We also have decided it makes the student feel like they are being punished by attending a Kumon center despite having some positive impact.

The discussion revolved around why a company would openly chastise students for having some academic shortcomings? Everyone learns at their own pace, and nobody wants to feel bad about that. Yet Kumon has this terrible logo boldly emblazoned all over the country on their learning centers.

Kumon is terribly out of touch, and upon further research, they have a name for this logo abomination. According to Kumon's 58th  annual report:

"The face inside is the “THINKING FACE.”
It represents the faces of children who learn, think, and grow within Kumon Centers. It also represents the faces of Kumon Instructors and staff who are thinking about the welfare of children and developing themselves."

Again, WE THINK NOT.  As if this was not enough, Kumon justifies their logo with further interpretation. "Every aspect of our logo expresses the values of Kumon." This is the point where you miss the main point of this petition. This may have gone unnoticed in 1954 when the company was founded. This logo requires a facelift for 2021.

C'mon Kumon, change that frown upside down! You will get more willing participants attending your centers if your logo creates a sense of empathy.
